- W4255189810 abstract "This chapter provides an overview of hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia is an important physical finding in a number of diseases and is the consequence of a disturbance of glucose homeostasis. It is, however, as a cause of brain dysfunction that hypoglycemia arouses most clinical interest, especially as it may occasionally be the only pointer to the ultimately correct diagnosis of the patient's underlying disease. Hypoglycemia is arbitrarily defined as a plasma glucose concentration below 2.5 mmol/L (45 mg/100 mL) or blood glucose of 2.2 mmol/L (40 mg/100 mL). It is often associated with symptoms but not invariably. Far and away, the most common cause of hypoglycemia encountered in clinical practice is that caused by overtreatment of diabetes with insulin or, rarely, sulphonylureas. This is usually referred to as iatrogenic to distinguish it from spontaneous hypoglycemia, which is always secondary to an underlying disease whose involvement in the causation of hypoglycemia is not necessarily immediately apparent. The chapter presents an etiological classification listing the best recognized causes of hypoglycemia and also presents two clinical classifications." @default.
