- W4255360323 abstract "The 1984 EP election in the United Kingdom (UK) occurred almost exactly one year after the national general election of 9 June 1983 which witnessed the return of Margaret Thatcher to office for a second consecutive term. Clearly the second EP election was not a genuine mid-term election and there was therefore some basis for describing it as a ‘non-event’.1 Nonetheless this did not deter the Labour Party’s new leader, Neil Kinnock, from construing the EP election as a national referendum on Thatcher’s first year of office since 1983. Indeed Kinnock was keen for the Labour Party to perform well in the Euro-election as clear evidence of its recovery after the electoral mauling it experienced twelve months earlier. The SDP—Liberal Alliance also looked forward with optimism to the EP election as a golden opportunity to strengthen its challenge to the longstanding and overwhelming dominance of the Conservative and Labour parties in British electoral politics. It had successfully contested its first general election in 1983 and had won the largest share of the vote achieved by a third party since 1923. Its 26.1 per cent of the vote was just 2.2 per cent behind Labour. Mindful of this progress the Alliance could be forgiven for harbouring high expectations in June 1984." @default.
