- W4255612967 abstract "This chapter focuses on the structure and functions of osteocalcin, which is the most abundant noncollagenous protein in bones, synthesized by osteoblasts and odontoblasts. It is highly conserved among all vertebrate species studied and usually contains three γ-carboxyglutamic acid residues (the human protein may contain only two) that provide the molecule with its calcium-binding properties. Osteocalcin binds tightly to hydroxyapatite and may function in the assembly of mineralized bones by regulating apatite crystal growth. Its synthesis is vitamin K-dependent and is stimulated by 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3. It is secreted as a precursor (approximate molecular weight 10,000) and processed with the active molecule of 46–50 residues stabilized by a single intrachain disulfide bond. The chapter discusses the primary structure, gene structure, and structural sites of osteocalcin." @default.
