- W4255831105 abstract "Infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) is the causative agent of an acute and contagious disease of juvenile salmonids, manifested as clinical disease at time of start-feeding and a few weeks post sea transfer. IPNV is the type species the genus Aquabirnavirus within the family Birnaviridae, and the virion has a diameter of 60 nm with a single-shelled icosahedral structure. Genome segment A contains a large open reading frame (ORF) encoding a 106 kDa polyprotein which is cleaved to generate precursor-VP2 (pVP2), VP4, and VP3. The polyprotein is processed by VP4, the viral protease. The mortality rate following an IPN outbreak varies, from negligible to almost 100%, with highest mortality seen in fry. The variation in mortality can be explained by factors determined by the host and the virus. Quantitative differences in virulence between IPNV strains, serotype Sp, can be ascribed to variations in amino acid sequence in the major capsid protein VP2. Host factors impact on resistance and quantitative trait loci (QTL) have been found to explain more than 80% of the genetic variation in resistance in Atlantic salmon. Whole genome sequencing has mapped the QTL region to an area encoding epithelial cadherin 1 (cdh 1). In addition to genetic selection, disease control of IPN is achieved by optimized management procedures aimed at preventing introduction of the virus through fish or from other sources and vaccination, all now being important for reducing spread and clinical manifestation of disease." @default.
