- W4255837254 abstract "Hypohydration (>2%body mass) impairs aerobic exercise performance in hot and temperate environments. The extent to which this is true in cold environments is unknown, but there is evidence that mechanisms for hypohydration-mediated fatigue in warmer environments are reduced in the cold. PURPOSE The purpose of this experiment was to determine whether hypohydration alters aerobic exercise performance in cold air. METHODS On two occasions separated by 1-week,4 men and 1 woman (age =24±7 yr, ht =170±7 cm, wt =70.8±5.2 kg, body fat =20±8%, VO2 peak =3.5±0.9 L//min) were exposed to ∼3-hr of passive heat stress (45°C, 50%rh, 1 m/s air speed) in the early morning with (euhydration, EUH) or without (hypohydration, HYP) fluid replacement in a balanced, crossover fashion. Later in the day, subjects sat in a cold environment (2°C, 50%rh, 2.2 m/s air speed) with minimal clothing (t-shirt, shorts, footwear, gloves and ear protection) for 1-hr before performing 30-min of cycle ergometry at 50%VO2 peak followed immediately by a 30-min performance time trial. Rectal and mean skin temperatures, heart rate, and RPE measurements were made every 10-min throughout exercise. Performance was assessed by the total amount of work (kJ) completed in the 30 min time trial. Treatment effects were analyzed using a paired t-test (trial) or two-way ANOVA (trial × time) for repeated measurements. RESULTS Body mass was significantly reduced in HYP (3.0±0.8%) compared with EUH (0.8±0.4%). No differences were observed between trials for measurements of rectal or mean skin temperatures. A main effect of trial was observed for heart rate, which was ∼12 b/min higher in HYP (p < 0.05), but RPE was not different at any time point between trials. Total work performed during the 30 min time trial was 283±76 kJ ((range =156–362 kJ) for EUH and 278±73 kJ ((range =157–342 kJ) for HYP (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS These data demonstrate that hypohydration does not reduce aerobic exercise performance in a cold environment. Hypohydration-mediated cardiovascular and thermoregulatory strain was moderate or absent, respectively." @default.
