The unique, observable chemical shift bands in the spectrum are increased from three (the relative areas of the sp2- and sp3-carbon resonance envelopes and a separate carbonyl band) to nine. This resolution permits the principal structural changes in chemically-modified coals to be mapped in unprecedented detail.
