- W4255969215 abstract "Vegetative state (VS), minimally conscious state (MCS), and locked-in syndrome are rare outcomes of stroke, but when they occur, they are devastating for everyone. This chapter details the pathophysiology, aetiology, presentation, and management of VS and MCS associated with stroke. The management of patients with MCS comprises supportive care, rehabilitation, and use of assistive devices. Initial steps in diagnosis entail establishing causation of the disorder of consciousness and excluding any persisting effect of anaesthesia, drugs, or metabolic disturbance. The role of nurses in the assessment process for prolonged disorder of consciousness in stroke is described briefly. It is essential that nurses have a good understanding of the conditions; current evidence and best practice; areas where practice development, research, and technological innovation are revolutionising the patient experience; quality of life and survival; and carer and community contributions to management." @default.
