- W4256154927 abstract "Excessive weight has become a major problem in the United States and the world. These are known risk factors for many disorders, including coronary artery disease, type II diabetes, hypertension and cancer. Recent work has shown that these problems are developing at an earlier age, in childhood. Children with cerebral palsy have additional challenges due to difficulties with access to physical activity and other issues. PURPOSE To determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity in a clinic population of children with cerebral palsy. METHODS The records of 137 children (86 male) with cerebral palsy, ages 1.2 years to 18 years (mean 9.8 yrs, SD 4.7 yrs) were reviewed. Height, weight, gender, age, and Gross Motor Functional Classification Scale (GMFCS) were recorded. Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated and compared to the BMI for age percentile chart (CDC). RESULTS 18.2%of the study group was greater than 95th percentile (overweight), and 10.9% were between the 85th and 95th percentile (at risk for overweight). Ambulatory children (GMFCS I and II) showed a trend (Pearson 's chi square, p = 0.06) toward higher prevalence of overweight (22.7%) and at risk (10.6%) compared to non-ambulatory wheelchair users (GMFCS IV and V), who were 9.6% overweight and 11.5% at risk. Age, gender, use of seizure medication, and age of onset of ambulation were not risk factors for overweight. Underweight was more prevalent in non-ambulatory children (p <.01) and in girls (p = .03). CONCLUSION Overweight is a significant problem in children with cerebral palsy, particularly among ambulatory children." @default.
