- W4256310716 abstract "Somewhat like a scene described in a Ray Bradbury science fiction novel, a global dust storm swept across Mars in 1994, according to a new analysis of radio telescope measurements taken in Arizona and Spain of the Martian atmosphere. Although scientists don't fully understand these storms, which happen every few years, they suspect the storms are triggered when sand-sized particles skip across a very fine layer of dust on the planet's surface. Eventually, the dust swirls over the entire planet, turning the dark blue sky to bright red and blotting out the Sun for months. A similar storm occurred on Mars in 1992, but generally such storms have been occurring less frequently since the 1970s, ground-based observations reveal. Between January and July of 1994, temperatures on Mars soared up to 100°F above prestorm levels, which is “a definite sign” of a global dust storm, says Todd Clancy, a researcher from the University of Colorado at Boulder. When tiny dust particles are stirred and suspended above the Mars surface, they absorb incoming sunlight and warm the entire atmosphere, explains Clancy, who presented a paper on the Martian dust storm at the American Astronomical Society annual Division for Planetary Science Meeting." @default.
