- W4256387462 abstract "Publisher SummaryAll furfural processes lead not only to furfural but also to carboxylic acids. Depending on the raw material employed, the production of carboxylic acids may exceed the production of furfural. The principal carboxylic acid produced is acetic acid. Formic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, and higher carboxylic acids follow in strongly diminishing order. The chapter discusses the origin of the carboxylic acids, extraction of acetic acid and formic acid with ethyl acetate, specific steam consumption of acetic acid recovery plants as based on extraction with ethyl acetate, recovery by freezing, recovery by extractive condensation, recovery by multieffect azeotropic distillation, and recovery by recirculation. Whereas the recirculation scheme discussed in the chaptetr is seen to have the following impressive advantages: (1) The outgoing acid concentration is increased by a factor of 4, thereby greatly reducing the specific steam consumption for an acid recovery by extraction. (2) The acidity in the reactors is increased, thus leading to improved catalysis. (3) 75 percent of the process water is recovered. The only problem with this attractive scheme is the fact that the evaporator and the superheater have to handle an elevated acid concentration at very high temperatures, where corrosion and fouling are severe." @default.
