- W4256421000 abstract "Abstract Fibers possess properties that cannot be found in bulk materials and these are exploited in their use as reinforcements in composites. The small diameters of most of these fibers contribute to their physical properties and give them great flexibility. There exist a very wide range of synthetic fibers that can be used as reinforcements with very different structures and properties. These fibers were mainly developed in the second half of the twentieth century, and some attain properties that are close to the theoretical limit in nature. The development of organic fibers, often associated with textile applications and which find uses in reinforcing rubber, has produced fibers such as aramids that possess many of the characteristics of textile fibers but can be twice as stiff as glass fibers, which dominate the commodity composites markets. Carbon fibers challenge the mechanical limits defined by the physics of materials and find an ever‐increasing number of applications. Most of the fibers considered in this article are used to reinforce organic matrix materials, which are limited by the upper operating temperature. Ceramic fibers, however, allow ceramic‐matrix composites to be produced that can operate at very high temperatures, and carbon fibers are used to make carbon‐carbon composites that, in the absence of oxygen, can be used at higher temperatures than any other material." @default.
