The woman who ventures to be heard in this space takes a greater risk than the poet or novelist who writes in the privacy of her own room for a reader whose space is as private. Today the challenge of expressing female ideas in this space is being reconsidered by women playwrights who see the theater as an appropriate medium to carry their message. As Linda Hart surmises in her study on the subject, the stage has become a lecturing hall in which women reeducate the audience: Language, space, and the body are loci for the woman playwright to dramatically challenge the images of woman determined in dominant discourse (13). In the nineteenth century, as it is to be supposed, women playwrights do not abound. Although at this time women are actively participating in the literary world of the novel and poetry, the theater is very much a masculine art. Both Hart and Patricia O'Connor, attribute the scarcity of women in this medium to the cultural imperatives of domesticity and the unofficial prohibition of women in public spaces (O'Connor Playwrights 376). Yet there have been women who, like today's playwrights, used the theater to rectify the images supported by their male contemporaries. In nineteenth-century Spain, Gertrudis Gomez de Avellaneda is one female writer who challenged the images of women embedded in the prevalent theatrical discourse. Studies have focused her confrontational stance toward the image of women as evidenced the feminist attitude of her literary characters and in her activities as a writer and a woman who defied the sexual barriers of her time (Miller 203). She carried this challenge to the theater where she used her experiences to portray heroines that differed from the image of angel of the hearth of the male literature of the time (Aldaraca 63).
