- W42664928 abstract "Publisher Summary Habituation is defined as a decrease in responding because of sheer stimulus repetition. This chapter describes the autonomic, psychophysiological responses of the intact, human organism such as the electrodermal galvanic skin response (GSR) and the plethysmographic vasomotor response (VMR). In this area of human autonomic psychophysiology, the past two decades have, at least in W e s t e r n laboratories, seen a considerable advance in terms of methodological sophistication. The pre-sixties psychophysiology was the era of the representative record produced by laboratories that were in the relatively unassailable position of being one of the few that had adequate equipment with which to measure particular psychophysiological functions. One compelling example of this state of affairs was the idea, based on representative record methodology, that the cephalic VMR could be used to differentiate defensive and orienting reactions on the basis of whether the VMR showed a constrictive or dilative response to stimuli." @default.
