- W42707428 abstract "Anthropogenic emissions, a result of human activities, play a crucial role in disturbing the radiative balance of the atmosphere, as described in the previous chapters, giving rise to global warming. Human activities are not only increasing the concentrations of existing greenhouse gases, but are also adding new infrared absorbing gases such as halons and chlorofluorocarbons, resulting in the enhancement of the greenhouse effect. For a thousand years prior to industrial revolution, abundances of the greenhouse gases were relatively constant. However as the world’s population increased, as the world became more industrialised and as agriculture developed, the abundances of greenhouse gases increased markedly (Box 5.1). The biggest single contributor is carbon dioxide, but chlorofluorocarbons, methane, ozone and nitrous oxide are also important. Figure 5.1 shows the contribution of various greenhouse gases to radiative change in 1980’s. Carbon dioxide emission accounted for about 55% of the total (IPCC 1990; UNCTD 1992)." @default.
