- W4280490033 abstract "Metabolic bone diseases are a group of disorders characterized by abnormal calcium metabolism and/or bone cell physiology leading to altered serum calcium concentration and/or skeletal failure. Bone consists of an extracellular matrix and cellular constituents which maintain bone formation and resorption throughout life with the net balance determining bone loss/growth. Vitamin D is a steroid hormone, which is largely produced in the skin from 7-dehydrocholesterol after exposure to sunlight. Skeletal scintigraphy involves injecting technetium which is taken up by osteoblastic activity. Widespread uptake is most commonly due to bony metastases but also occurs in osteomalacia and Paget's disease; local uptake can be seen with fractures. Rickets and osteomalacia are childhood and adult diseases respectively due to vitamin D deficiency. Rickets results when defective mineralization during skeletal growth leads to impaired epiphyseal growth plate calcification and bony deformity. Childhood rickets can present with characteristic skeletal deformities." @default.
