- W4280497423 abstract "Have you ever thought about becoming a peer reviewer for the Journal of Midwifery & Women's Health (JMWH)? Now is the time to give it some serious consideration. Read on to learn what is involved in becoming a JMWH peer reviewer and benefits to you and the profession in doing so. Publication of quality research and other scholarship in academic journals is part of the growth and development of a profession. JMWH, as the official journal of the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM), has a long history of publishing scholarly works describing the development of the midwifery profession in the United States and building research evidence to support practicing midwives. Peer review is an important component in ensuring the quality of scholarly journals. For JMWH, peer review involves the review and assessment of manuscripts submitted to the Journal by peers, or readers of the Journal, most commonly midwives as members of the profession. Peer reviewers contribute to the publication of quality articles that present new ideas, new research evidence, or new clinical approaches.1 Benefits of being a peer reviewer include contributing to the profession, developing critical analytic skills, learning about new content related to the profession, and helping authors to improve the clarity of their manuscripts. Serving as a peer reviewer can be a great introduction to becoming an author. Developing skills to critically review the work of others helps the reviewer develop their own writing skills. After the peer review process is complete and the editor has made an initial publication decision, the editorial and peer reviewer feedback is shared anonymously with the peer reviewers, providing an opportunity to learn from the full assessment of the specific manuscript reviewed. The American Midwifery Certification Board offers 1.5 contact hours toward recertification for completing a peer review for a relevant refereed journal up to 10 hours. JMWH recognizes our peer reviewers annually by name in the Journal and presents annual awards to reviewers who provide exceptional quantity and quality of reviews. Several types of peer review processes are used by scholarly journals. JMWH uses a double anonymous peer review process, which means that the peer reviewers do not know the identity of the authors, and the authors do not know the identity of the peer reviewers. Although anonymous review is a common approach believed to reduce bias in peer review, some newer processes include identifying peer reviewers and authors and making the reviews public. Referred to as open review, some experts believe identifying the reviewers and authors to each other results in more honest and unbiased reviews. Others, however, express concerns that open review may reduce the veracity of the review because of the open nature of the process.1 Regardless of the specific process, the goal of reviewers is to identify positive aspects of the manuscript and suggest areas where authors can make improvements. Conducting a peer review involves a number of steps. Although there are multiple ways to complete a review, reading the manuscript to get an overall sense of the content and focus is a good first step. Reviewers follow the instructions provided by JMWH including rating items such as appropriateness for JMWH and our readers, clarity of the organization and writing, clarity of purpose, and presentation of new information to justify publication. Reviewers also provide specific comments about their assessment of the manuscript and are asked to recommend a decision to request manuscript revision, accept the manuscript, or reject the manuscript. They consider if the title highlights the key results of the scholarly work and the abstract accurately summarizes manuscript content.2 For research manuscripts, reviewers assess if authors provide the background to support the need for the study, the appropriate methods to answer the study question, results reflecting the work that was done, and a discussion that highlights new findings and places the study in the context of the available literature, including study limitations.2 JMWH publishes a variety of manuscript types. In reviewing scholarly works other than research, reviewers look for a clear statement of purpose, a clear and logical evidence-based approach to the information provided, and a discussion placing the work in the context of current literature, with implications for clinical practice and policy as appropriate. Peer reviewers are expected to follow ethical guidelines for serving in this capacity. JMWH adheres to the ethical guidelines provided by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).3 Ethical responsibilities of peer reviewers include only reviewing manuscripts for which a reviewer has expertise, recusing oneself from a review if there is a conflict of interest, remaining free of bias as much as possible in conducting the review, maintaining confidentiality of the manuscript information by not sharing and not incorporating information into one's own or others’ work, and conducting the review in a timely manner. Authors are encouraged to participate in peer review as part of their contribution to the Journal and the profession.3 How does one become a JMWH peer reviewer? Any reader of JMWH who has clinical and academic background related to the overall focus of our Journal4 may become a peer reviewer. JMWH provides written guidance for new peer reviewers to help direct the focus of reviews to the appropriateness of a manuscript for the Journal according to its overall content, logic of presentation and argument, and discussion of relevance to the midwifery profession. The JMWH editors’ education session on peer review presented at the 2022 ACNM Annual Meeting & Exhibition in Chicago will be available after the meeting on the JMWH website at jmwh.org. Additional materials to support JMWH peer reviewers, including a forthcoming webinar in fall 2022, are under development. JMWH is recruiting qualified and enthusiastic peer reviewers across the full spectrum of ACNM membership; we encourage all members to consider joining our team. Interested midwives may send an email to the JMWH Managing Editor, Laura Bolte, at JMWH@acnm.org. We look forward to welcoming you to our team and to your involvement in promoting the quality of our Journal and the profession of midwifery." @default.
