• W4280551657 abstract "The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) has projected a shortage of 15,800 to 30,200 surgeons by 2034. At present, two training pathways are available in vascular surgery: 2-year traditional vascular surgery fellowships undertaken after general surgery training and integrated vascular surgery residencies offered to medical students. We examined the practice destinations for graduates of each of these two distinct training pathways. The AAMC Report on Residents (available at: www.aamc.org) was used to access all graduate practice plans from 2011 to 2020 for vascular surgery fellowships and integrated vascular surgery residencies. The rates of in-state and out-of-state destinations for trainees were calculated for each specialty. The AAMC Report on Residents was also used to access data on individuals practicing in federally designated medically underserved areas from 2011 to 2020. The Fisher exact test was used to discern statistically significant differences. Data were collected for the study periods examined. Differences in specialty training destination selection stratified by state and medically underserved areas are presented in Tables I and II, respectively. We found that graduating vascular surgery fellows were more likely to practice out of state and integrated vascular residency trainees were more likely to stay in the state where they had trained. This could be because of the length of training because vascular residents spend 5 to 7 years in one state and vascular fellows only spend 2 years at their training site. The behavior to practice in an underserved population was similar between the fellowship and integrated resident graduates and the difference was not statistically significant.
