- W4281694834 abstract "Reviewed by: Reading Scripture as the Church: Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Hermeneutic of Discipleship by Derek W. Taylor Mark S. Brocker Reading Scripture as the Church: Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Hermeneutic of Discipleship. By Derek W. Taylor. Downers Grove, Illinois: InterVarsity Press, 2020. 283 pp. Derek Taylor has written this book under the guiding conviction that the church stands as the locus and agent of faithful reading of Scripture (1). In specifying how the church fulfills its hermeneutical responsibility Taylor follows the lead of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, while also engaging in conversation with several leading representatives of other approaches to ecclesial hermeneutics, especially John Webster, Robert Jenson, and Stanley Hauerwas. According to Taylor, Bonhoeffer leads us toward a constructive and integrative hermeneutic of discipleship. For Bonhoeffer, to read 'as the church' is to read attentively to Christ's concrete voice (19). That is why, asserts Taylor, the church must never stop asking the question that was so crucial for Bonhoeffer: Who is Jesus Christ for us today? (131, 247). In Taylor's ecclesial hermeneutics the fundamental orientation to the interpretative process can be stated as: We do not read Scripture in order to know Scripture. We read Scripture in order to come to Jesus (17). Disciples do not move from Jesus back to the text, but from the text [End Page 216] to Jesus. Following after Jesus, moving toward Jesus, provides the framework for hermeneutical faithfulness. The community of followers of Jesus are to read the text within the activity of discipleship. As Taylor observes, for Bonhoeffer even the act of interpretation, if severed from the act of following, is nothing but a sophisticated attempt to evade the force of the text (190). Taylor construes the church as a hermeneutical community existing at the intersection of four identity-defining relationships: (1) in relationship to the risen Christ, (2) in relationship to its historical-institutional past, (3) in relationship to a concrete communal location, and (4) in relationship to the world (14). These relationships correspond to the basic four-part structure of his book. Taylor follows a similar pattern in each part. He begins with a close reading of a leading representative (or representatives) of an ecclesial hermeneutical approach that addresses the given identity-defining relationship, and then he invites Bonhoeffer into the conversation. An integrated hermeneutic of discipleship emerges. This book is a significant contribution to ecclesial hermeneutics and to Bonhoeffer scholarship. But this contribution is not limited to the scholarly community. I find especially compelling Taylor's insight into the crucial role the path of discipleship plays in Bonhoeffer's ecclesial hermeneutics. At St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Beaverton, Oregon, Taylor's account of Bonhoeffer's hermeneutic of discipleship is helping us refocus our Confirmation program. We plan to be more intentional in stressing the importance of studying Scripture and other catechetical materials not just to learn what to believe about God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, but especially in order to come to Jesus. Taylor's book has reminded us how vital nurturing followers of Jesus is to the life and ministry of our community of faith. Reading his book will be a workout, but I encourage thoughtful, theologically-minded church leaders to tackle it. It will make clear, as Taylor writes, that the church's fundamental priority is not its own survival, but its call to remain faithful to Jesus and to follow after him (118). [End Page 217] Mark S.
