- W4281704534 abstract "Background: Dietary alterations and corrections remain one of the supreme pillars of diabetes management. Correct dietary Knowledge can play a significant role in strengthening the dietary pattern among diabetic patients. At the same time, misbeliefs about certain foods can hamper the efforts towards diabetes management. There is limited data on prevalent dietary misbeliefs among diabetic patients. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the dietary knowledge and practices among urban diabetic populace (25 years and older) of city Gurugram, India. Method: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted in May-July 2021. An online questionnaire was conceptualized, designed and pre-tested before using for data collection. Data was collected on demographic profile, dietary knowledge and practices questions based on common dietary myths related to food and diabetes. Data thus collected were analyzed using Microsoft excel. Results: A total of 694 type 2 diabetic subjects of both genders completed the study. It was observed that 45% subjects followed traditional 3 meal pattern, 17% followed 4-5 meal pattern and 12% subjects ate whenever they felt hungry. No significant difference was found while comparing the data for male and female population.Tabled 1DemographicsPercentage %Age: 25-34 35-44 45-54 55 and above13472614Males43Females57Education: High school or less Graduate Post graduate or more84151Occupation: Employed Unemployed919Dietary knowledge related QuestionsCorrect responsesEating too much sugar causes diabetes43%Artificial sweeteners are a healthy substitute for sugar46%Jaggery does not elevate blood sugar levels44%Brown sugar is better for diabetics than white sugar69%Honey is safe to consume for diabetics23%Dates and raisins do not elevate the blood sugar levels53%White rice worsens diabetes14%High protein diet cures diabetes23%Diabetics can eat all fruits as much as one desires65%Diabetics should not consume mangoes at all29%Boiled potato contains no starch37%Bitter guard consumption lowers blood sugars83%Eating soaked Fenugreek lowers blood sugars71%Refined flours should be avoided in diabetes89%Practice studiedPercentageEveryday2-3 times/week2-3 times per monthNeverFrequency of consuming sweets and sugars4125430Frequency of consuming fried, high fat foods1234332Frequency of consuming high protein foods336070Frequency of eating high fibre foods434980Frequency of consuming artificial sweetener1531477 Open table in a new tab Discussion: The study clearly indicates widespread prevalence of dietary misbeliefs among diabetic patients. Unfortunately, many of them favor intake of high glycemic index foods leading to mismanagement of diabetes. Busting age-old dietary myths at the populace level is crucial and imperative. National Nutrition education programs should be designed to improve nutritional knowledge and emphasise greatly on busting the myths." @default.
