- W4281707977 abstract "This volume showcases the different ways in which stewardship is being studied across the disciplines, in order to begin conversations about stewarding the Earth among scholars in science, social science, and the humanities. Some researchers take an historical approach, investigating how ideas of “good stewardship” have sometimes allowed humans to ravage the planet. Other scholars consider contemporary mindsets – e.g., how we develop a “sense of place” – that may or may not inspire humans to be the best stewards of the whole planet. Researchers in the humanities explore contemporary literature that envisions the dark future that may face humanity if we do not soon succeed in stewarding the planet and its resources. Some scholars examine the progress that has been made through legislation, such as the U.S. Endangered Species Act, while others delineate the challenges facing humans attempting to protect rangelands, national parks, and oceans. In the field of product stewardship, researchers have investigated the intended and unintended consequences of initiatives to shift the financial burden of packaging from consumers to manufacturers and importers. Ultimately stewardship is a meta-disciplinary concept that we can leverage to cross interdisciplinary boundaries and preserve the future of the Earth and its species." @default.
