- W4281966196 abstract "China’s rise as a dominant player in the global order and the US response to it can be explained through Thucydides’ idea that whenever an existing great power feels threatened to be displaced by an emerging one, it would result in a war. By the same Thucydidean logic, one can understand the Sino-India relations. India not only has a certain view and threat perception of China, the United States is also projecting India as a balancer to the rising Chinese power in the region. The United States is using India in its competition with China by closely aligning with it and renaming its Pacific Command into Indo-Pacific Command. It also envisages a role for India in monitoring and policing in the arc stretching from Aden, Singapore to Central Asia. However, India’s immediate neighborhood poses a dilemma to New Delhi where China not only has a strong position but also its most trusted partner and strategic ally Pakistan holds a strong threat perception against India. While India is a strategic ally of the United States, it faces a dilemma as both its rivals and challengers to its rise are its immediate neighbors whereas the United States is not. Although India claims that it is in a position to militarily deal with both its adversaries at the same time in a two-frontal scenario, the recent Pulwama/Balakot and Gulwan crises indicate otherwise. The chapter argues that India’s absence from South Asia has provided China an opportunity to engage and enhance its influence in South Asia and that if India wants to rise to the global power status, it should improve its relations with its South Asian neighbors, especially with Pakistan. Without a peaceful and friendly South Asia, India’s desire of becoming a global power would remain a mirage." @default.
