- W4283165890 abstract "The concept of biorefinery applied to food waste can lead to the production of both value-added products and biofuels, solving the environmental and economic issues linked to the current food waste management. Anaerobic digestion of food waste to produce biogas and biomethane represents a milestone of the biorefinery approach. Although anaerobic digestion of food waste has been well-studied on a small scale, it is necessary to improve the process at an industrial level to make it economically profitable, environmentally sustainable and more widely applicable. In this study, the recent technological and process solutions implemented by a food waste industrial anaerobic digestion plant were described. Particle size, dry matter and temperature values together with pre-treatment, pumping and plug-flow systems adopted made it possible to produce 181 Sm3/ton and 107 Sm3/ton of biogas and biomethane, respectively. The microbial community responsible for the high plant productivity was characterized by microbiome analysis." @default.
