- W4283169191 abstract "<h3>Introduction</h3> The negative impact of endoscopic procedures on the environment is increasingly recognised with interest from the endoscopy community and national societies to reduce this1. For the NHS to achieve net-zero status all aspects of the system need to be considered including paper reduction. It has been shown in a previous study that patients attending a dental clinic were positive towards receiving information electronically2. We set out to see if patients in our endoscopy unit were accepting of this and what the impact would be. <h3>Methods</h3> At Somerset FT around 1000 patients are seen at our 2 endoscopy units each month. Endoscopists and nursing staff were asked to use electronic referral information, printed information was no longer available. Endoscopists printed 3 rather than 4 copies of the report and QR codes were supplied to patients as an alternative to paper versions of the discharge information. Patients attending the unit were asked to complete a questionnaire assessing their views on electronic information. Questions asked included how they would prefer to receive their procedural report and their care plan be that by paper copy, email or by scanning a QR code. <h3>Results</h3> We were able to reduce paper use by an average of 4.5 sheets of paper per patient (4500 sheets per month (54000 per year). This equates to a carbon reduction of 263.537kg CO² per annum, although is likely to be higher when considering hidden emissions in transport and storage which are difficult to calculate accurately. This is the equivalent of travelling from London to Glasgow by car more than 3.5 times. 104 patients completed all questions. 90% felt it was <i>acceptable</i> to receive information electronically however, only 56% would <i>prefer</i> the information in digital format, 44% still preferred paper. of the 56% who preferred digital information, email was the more accepted format with 93% of people opting for this over QR codes. <h3>Conclusions</h3> By engaging the whole endoscopy team, we have been able to change working practices to significantly reduce the amount of paper used within the unit. With over half of patients preferring electronic information, it is likely to be a change that is achievable and sustainable. However, we cannot ignore that a large proportion of those surveyed still prefer paper, so we must work towards a solution to benefit both the patient cohort directly and indirectly by reducing emissions. <h3>References</h3> Maurice JB, Siau K, Sebastian S, Ahuja N, Wesley E, Stableforth W, Hayee B; Green Endoscopy Network.
