- W4283204394 abstract "A review of recent publications regarding Martian rotorcraft aerodynamics and NASA’s proposed design of a future Mars Helicopters was performed. Rotorcraft flight on Mars is governed by a unique flight condition: simultaneous low Reynolds number and high subsonic Mach number flow. Using NASA’s proposed Mars Science Helicopter (MSH) design specifications, a test article was built that allowed for similar flight loads to be generated during hover flight in a simulated Mars environment. The test stand built was verified for accurately being able to capture rotor performance using a constant NACA 0014 airfoil geometry along the span. A Blade Element Momentum Theory (BEMT) model was developed and compared to the experimental results recorded. Good agreement was seen between the experimental and computational data sets after correcting the BEMT model with a drag table offset. Moreover, preliminary CFD results of the MSH’s 75% span airfoil were used to generate a first order approximation model of the MSH’s flight performance in Martian atmospheric conditions. Testing of the MSH’s rotors in an analogous, simulated Mars atmosphere is discussed along with future research goals related to the study of Martian rotorcraft flight. The conclusion sought by this research investigation is a correction to BEMT modeling for low Reynolds number, high subsonic Mach number flow that will be deduced from a comparison of the experimental and computational data generated in future research efforts." @default.
