- W4283209670 abstract "Wall-resolved large-eddy simulations were carried out for the flow over a rearward-facing ramp configuration, that is representative of surfaces generating smooth-body separation. The geometry and flow conditions were motivated by an experimental investigation, which was conducted in order to provide data for validating numerical modeling. The flow situation was adopted as the subject for the AIAA Fluid Dynamics Technical Committee’s Large-Eddy Simulation Workshop on Smooth-Body Separation, which was a component of the 1st AIAA High-Fidelity Computational Fluid Dynamics Workshop at the AIAA SciTech 2022 Forum. Because the experimental Reynolds number is challenging, even for approximate techniques such as wall-modeled large-eddy simulation, the present computations were initiated in order to provide benchmark results for a comparison of numerical methods. Two different Reynolds numbers were considered in the simulations, namely 300,000 and 1,000,000 based upon the streamwise ramp length, which are lower than the experimental value of 7,000,000. Solutions to the unsteady three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations were obtained utilizing a high-fidelity computational scheme and an implicit time-marching approach. Grid resolution studies were performed for each Reynolds number in order assure numerical accuracy. A number of metrics are provided to attest to the quality of the solutions. Features of the flowfields are elucidated, and comparisons are made between the results at the respective Reynolds numbers. These include a description of boundary-layer parameters and the development of turbulence along the ramp surface." @default.
