- W4283320081 abstract "Abstract The word “change” appears quite often in much of the psychotherapeutic literature; such ubiquity results in the term sounding insipid and anodyne. However, change should be viewed as possessing active, goal-oriented connotations. This chapter explores how patterned activities help reset the mind, both in its intrapersonal and interpersonal aspects, by adjusting to transitions and transformations. The working premise is that the psyche is inherently adaptive and that it is incessantly accommodating and adopting resources from outside itself to renovate and expand its capabilities. The pivotal, explanatory concept is “adaptive phasic structurations” (APSs). Concrete examples include rituals, ceremonies, stages of change, and psychosocial adjustment elicited in psychotherapeutic sessions. The function of order, chaos, reordering, and liminality in explaining how APSs facilitate positive therapeutic repair of the psyche is examined. To illustrate this chapter’s points, examples of “stages of change” are provided." @default.
