- W4283370736 abstract "Van Goens returned to Asia in 1656 in the aftermath of the fall of Colombo to the Company. He would act first as commander-in-chief of the VOC’s forces in South Asia and from the mid-1660s onwards as governor of Ceylon. In these capacities Van Goens oversaw the final campaigns against the Portuguese on Ceylon and in southern India, culminating in the fall of Cochin in January 1663. Van Goens was convinced of the value of the Ceylon governorate to the Company, instituting a program of territorial expansion, overhauling the Company’s administration, instituting direct sailings from Ceylon to Europe and arguing for moving the VOC’s capital to Colombo. Van Goens was able to implement a strong information control on the island, stifling dissent, appointing loyal clients and punishing dissent harshly. The large extent of the Ceylon governorate meant many positions needed to be filled, allowing Van Goens to operate as a powerful patron within the Company hierarchy in Asia. Van Goens in his turn was able to use his power to advance careers on Ceylon to show himself a loyal client to his own patrons in the Dutch Republic. This relationship was underlined by gift exchanges and familial connections forged through his second marriage." @default.
