- W4283520072 abstract "Over the last decade, the estimated prevalence of gout has increased, driven in part by the aging population in the US. This study aims to characterize and estimate the healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) and expenditure of patients with gout in the US. This cross-sectional study used the 2015-2019 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) data to identify gout patients (ICD-9 code ‘274’ and ICD-10 code ‘M10’) of all ages. Descriptive weighted analyses were used to characterize patient characteristics, HCRU (inpatient, outpatient, emergency department (ED), office-based medical provider visits and length of stay), and healthcare expenditure (in 2020 US dollars). Generalized Linear Model (GLM) with gamma distribution, log link, and Inverse Probability of Treatment Weighting (IPTW) were used to compare the annual healthcare expenditure of patients with gout and without gout. The study consisted of an unweighted sample of 1,767 patients representing 3.83 million treated gout patients in the US, with an overall prevalence of 1.18% (95% CI = 1.09-1.27). Majority of these patients were aged ≥ 65 years (54.40%), males (74.85%), non-Hispanic whites (77.10%), and privately insured (61.58%). The mean [Standard Error (SE)] annual inpatient, outpatient, ED, office-based medical provider visits and number of hospital days were 0.29 (0.02), 1.58 (0.15), 0.44 (0.03), 12.91 (0.56) and 1.87 (0.24), respectively. The annual mean (SE) expenditures were $17,066 ($877) of which the inpatient costs were the primary driver [mean (SE) = $5,698 ($630)], followed by pharmacy costs [mean (SE) = $4,272 ($274)]. As per the GLM estimates, patients treated for gout had 61% [Incidence Rate Ratio (IRR) = 1.61] higher expenditures than patients without gout. This study found that gout is associated with a high economic burden, mainly driven by inpatient and pharmacy costs. Future treatments should address these costs to reduce the economic burden." @default.
