- W4283701368 abstract "Numerous initiatives are being developed to counter the prevailing ‘infodemic’. Under pressure from politicians and society, social media platforms have taken measures to counteract the spreading of misleading information about Covid-19. Journalistic editors are working overtime to correct the flow of misinformation, and governments are considering stricter legislation on disinformation. Yet none of these initiatives are yet sufficiently effective. Those who believe Bill Gates is using the vaccine for personal gain will only see confirmation of their own rightness in Twitter’s pop-up messages warning against fake news. Fact-checking proves to be only partially helpful. A verified message has a positive effect on the factual knowledge of news users, but this does not mean that they change their beliefs and behaviour. To effectively deal with online misinformation, we need to shift the focus from debunking to prebunking (pre-emptive debunking). Based on our research project AntiViruses for fake news (2019-2020) – where we investigated game interventions increasing digital resilience to misinformation – we came to understand that the prebunking of young adults (18-22 years old) about the tactics of disinformation and its consequences makes them more resilient to manipulated information. Furthermore, we have reason to believe they are less inclined to spread disinformation." @default.
