- W4283760874 abstract "Peter Vámos was born at Szekesfehervar, Hungary, on 6 November 1940. As a young man, he developed a distaste for the communist regime in Hungary, and his participation in anti-communist activities had repercussions that caused him to flee to England, leaving his close relatives behind. He arrived in Sheffield in the mid-1960s. He was able to enrol as a postgraduate student at Sheffield University under the supervision of Douglas Northcott, who nurtured Peter's love of algebra and encouraged him and David Sharpe to turn their notes from a seminar on ‘Injective modules’ into a book. In 1968, Peter was awarded the degree of PhD, discovered the first example of a non-representable matroid of rank 4 on a set of 8 elements (this matroid is the subject of a Wikipedia article entitled ‘Vámos matroid’) and successfully applied for a Junior Research Fellowship in Pure Mathematics at Sheffield University. In this way, Peter began to build a career in academia in the UK. He served as Lecturer (later Reader) in Pure Mathematics at Sheffield University, and then in 1983 succeeded David Rees as Professor of Pure Mathematics at Exeter University. The main focus of his resesarch was in commutative algebra, and in that subject Peter is well known for his substantial contribution to the 1976 answer to a question raised more than 20 years earlier by Irving Kaplansky, namely: which commutative rings have the property that all their finitely generated modules are direct sums of cyclic modules?" @default.
