- W4283773670 abstract "To date, more than 200 spacecraft have explored about 100 extraterrestrial bodies, including all planets and their major satellites. In situ observational data obtained through space missions have revealed the bodies' sizes, densities, orbital parameters, compositional distributions, and surface conditions. Such scientific data provide an essential background for discussing the possible acquisition and utilization of materials in space. The value of materials depends mainly on their chemical compositions, mineralogical states, and accessibilities. For an early stage of in situ resource utilization (ISRU), the availability of volatiles, including water on asteroids, comets, and the Moon, becomes a primary issue because of their utility as fuel and solvents. Volatile materials obtained from small bodies may support reusable transportation systems between solar bodies. Through such systems, materials excavated from appropriate bodies would be transferred to develop large-scale infrastructures, such as bases. Asteroids would be valuable sources of regolith for radiation shielding and metals for manufacturing. Extensive utilization of space resources on Earth is a possibility through the acquisition of small near-Earth asteroids." @default.
