- W4284713278 abstract "The settlement of many Arabs from Hadhramawt (also spelt Hadhramout) in the Malay archipelago over many centuries led to a strong religious, cultural and linguistic influence in the region. This is manifested in, among other elements, rich vocabulary items in national vernaculars of Indonesia and Malaysia. This chapter will first briefly examine some aspects of the language contact between Hadhrami Arabic and Malay/Indonesian languages (MIL) and other local (Indonesian) languages, but more emphasis will be laid on the development of the semantics and usage of Hadhrami Arabic vocabulary in the speech of Arab Indonesians (known informally as Jama’ah, literally ‘the group’). Their variety of Arabic can be termed Jama’ah Arabic (JA). This chapter will examine examples of linguistic changes that took place at the levels of phonology (sound change), morphology (word formation), syntax (sentence structure) and, more importantly, semantics (meaning). Data for this research was taken from the three largest cities with Hadhrami populations in Indonesia: Solo, Surabaya and Jakarta. Findings suggest that Hadhrami immigrants preserved their own variety of Arabic together with the local vernaculars, and this in turn led to a state of bilingualism. It is also clear that HA vocabulary and expressions have become common not only among the Jama’ah members but also among other Indonesians who live in areas of the Hadhrami-descent community. This is an indication of the social harmony that people in these areas enjoy." @default.
