- W4284964341 abstract "Biomass is composed of organic material that comes from plants or animals. When processed in energy conversion plants, it can be utilized to generate electricity or heat. Unfortunately, a large amount of this material decomposes in forests and farms, generating pollutant emissions, such as methane, which has a high global warming potential. In addition, biomass is in many occasions burned in open piles or in wildfires, contributing to the generation of unhealthy emissions of small particulate matter, CO 2 , and other harmful pollutants. As mentioned in Chapter 3, biomass can be processed through direct combustion, pyrolysis, gasification, or biological conversion processes to obtain electric power, heat, or fuels. A less common, yet very effective, way of processing biomass is by means of using thermal torches or nonthermal plasma discharges. This chapter provides some typical ranges of parameter values and results with plasma conversion of biomass." @default.
