- W4285009610 abstract "This chapter looks at the social classes in the Viking Age society: kings/chieftains, householders, and unfree thralls or slaves. The social elite was estimated to be around 1 to 2 percent of the population, while the householders and their families made up the largest group of Scandinavians. Slaves probably made up about a fourth of the population. Land ownership and family background laid the ground rules for the social hierarchy. There were still opportunities to climb the social ladder and social demotions also occurred. The chapter reviews the poem Rígsþula and its picture of the social hierarchy, then it continues by looking at which abilities members of the elite were expected to possess. Finally, it considers the women's roles in the various social ranks, first by getting to know the Oseberg chieftain better, and how women are portrayed in Hávamál." @default.
