- W4285012227 abstract "The objective was to determine whether the inclusion of curcumin and microencapsulated phytogenic (alone or combined) could replace the combination of ionophore and non-ionophore antibiotics in the diet of calves in the initial breeding phase and maintain zootechnical performance. The microencapsulated phytogenic blend used in this study contained carvacrol, cinnamaldehyde, and thymol. Twenty-four calves housed in individual pens were divided into the following groups: CONTROL (a diet containing 0.81 mg/kg of body weight (BW) of monensin and 0.162 mg/kg of BW of flavomycin), CUR (a diet containing 0.9 mg/kg of BW of curcumin), PHYT (a diet containing 2.7 mg/kg of BW of phytogenic) and CUR + PHYT (a diet containing 0.9 mg/kg of BW of curcumin and 2.7 mg/kg of BW of phytogenic). Calves in the CONTROL and PHYT groups showed greater final BW than animals in the CURC group (P = 0.05) due to the greater daily weight gain during the experimental period (P = 0.05). The calves in the CURC, PHYT, and CURC + PHYT groups had lower leukocyte counts than the CONTROL group (P = 0.05), and calves in the PHYT and CURC + PHYT groups had lower lymphocyte counts than the CONTROL (P = 0.05). The CURC treatment provided higher concentrations of IgA than the CONTROL and PHYT groups (P = 0.03); calves in the CURC group had higher concentrations of light chain IgG than the other treatments (P < 0.01). These findings suggest that a microencapsulated phytogenic agent containing carvacrol, cinnamaldehyde, and thymol can replace a combination of ionophore (monensin) and non-ionophore (flavomycin) antibiotics in the diet of dairy calves during the post-weaning period and that further research should be carried out to identify a better curcumin dosage for this animal category." @default.
