- W4285058208 abstract "A heart-on-a-chip is a microfluidic device that mimics the structural and functional characteristics of the heart by culturing cardiomyocytes on a microfluidic platform. The device can be used for several applications like studying the physiology of cells, analyzing the effect of various drugs and chemicals on heart cells, or evaluating the cell response to different stimulations. This chapter begins with a brief discussion on the need for heart-on-a-chip devices followed by an explanation on the physiological environment and functions of the heart cells. The cell biological requirements along with the design, simulation, and microfabrication of heart cells on chip are then discussed. The different optical and electrical methods for studying the cultured cardiomyocytes are also briefed. The chapter concludes by addressing some of the current challenges and future scope for heart-on-a-chip devices. These devices have the potential to replace the conventional animal model studies and provide better insights to disease modelling and cardiotoxicity studies by closely mimicking in vivo conditions on a microfluidic platform." @default.
