It investigates whether and how being brought to power by foreign hands affects the tenure of imposed leaders. The chapter then argues that regime change—particularly regime change that simply substitutes one leader for another while paying little attention to supporting institutions—increases the likelihood that the leader so installed will be removed from power by force or the threat of force. It emphasizes that leaders who come to power after foreign-imposed regime change face a significantly higher risk of irregular removal and a lower risk of regular removal. The chapter then identifies the six distinct ways that imposed leaders have been pushed out of power irregularly, discusses the first three types, and provides examples of each. Ultimately, the chapter displays the case studies for two kinds of irregular removal: coups tolerated or encouraged by dissatisfied patrons against wayward protégés (the United States and Duong Van Minh in South Vietnam) and uprisings by dissatisfied domestic audiences against leaders strongly identified with foreign patrons (Emperor Maximilian of Mexico).
