- W4285131445 abstract "Protective textiles with various forms of two-dimensional (2D) fabrics and three-dimensional (3D) preforms are discussed in this chapter. The fabric structures considered include from traditional single-layer woven fabrics to 3D multilayer woven, knitted, and nonwovens. These are outlined in relation to ballistic threats. The recent developments on nanotubes/fibres and shear-thickening fluids for ballistic structures are reviewed. Their protection mechanism is explained for both soft fabrics and rigid plates. Analytical and empirical modelling including some finite element methods for the prediction of protective textile properties also are discussed. Moreover, the protective properties of fibre-based soft and rigid materials can be improved by employing high-strength/high-modulus fibres and tough matrices incorporating nanomaterials. It is concluded that the fabric architectures play important roles in enhancing the protective properties of textile materials. All these parameters are of primary importance for perfecting the protective structures with high damage tolerance and high protection limits." @default.
