- W4285143024 abstract "In Chaps. 10 and 11 , the molecular systematicsSystematics of parasitic nematodesParasitic nematodes and trematodes were discussed, and we saw how molecular phylogeneticMolecular phylogenetics studies had contributed significantly to shed light on the relationships among groups of helminths. This chapter elaborated on the molecular systematicsSystematics of parasitic cestodes, also more commonly known as tapeworms. Phylogenetic relationshipsPhylogenetic relationships among medically important cestodes were discussed through evidence from molecular-based studies. Based on an estimate, there are approximately 5100 species within 680 genera in class Cestoda, with a substantial proportion causing diseases in humans and animals. Examples include Taenia soliumTaenia solium and Taenia saginataTaenia saginata , better recognized as the pork and beef tapeworm. Estimates according to the World Health Organization (WHO)World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) indicate that 50 million people are infected with T. solium. Additionally, major stakeholders such as the food and livestock industry have to tackle tapeworm infectionsTapeworminfections in animals, leading to economic losses and decreased production capability. Thus, molecular systematicsSystematics and phylogenetic studies are the cornerstones for disease control by uncovering the parasites’ distribution, identity, biology, relationships, host associations, and evolutionary forcesEvolutionary forces driving genetic variationGenetic variation and speciation." @default.
