Cyanobacteria produce glycogen and other sugars from fixed CO2 via photosynthesis. These bacteria possess characteristic metabolism and metabolic enzymes. Unicellular cyanobacteria are considered suitable tools for bioproduction because genetic manipulation by homologous recombination is available for several cyanobacterial species. Genetic manipulation enables cyanobacteria to produce value-added products, such as sugars and bioplastic compounds. Hence, metabolic engineering of cyanobacteria has attracted considerable research interest worldwide. This review summarizes the various tools for genetic manipulation and metabolic enzymes that have been developed recently, evoking the era of synthetic biology in cyanobacteria." @default.
