- W4285152322 abstract "Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) is a bacteria-mediated phenomenon that oxidizes ammonium into N2 gas in anaerobic conditions. It occurs in diversified environments and plays an active role in biogeochemical processes, the marine nitrogen cycle, the global nitrogen budget, etc. Its active involvement and ubiquitous distribution in various marine environments has prioritized our concern about the anammox processes as well as the biological roles and applicable perspectives in a marine context. This chapter aims to decipher an underlying viewpoint and the significance of anammox processes and relevant microorganisms in marine ecosystems through existing evidence, with special emphasis on its roles in biogeochemical cycling, marine nitrogen cycling, and the global nitrogen budget. Moreover, the potential applications in marine aquaculture as well as nitrogen removal from industrial effluent and wastewater treatment are discussed based on the literature. Consequently, the chapter finds anammox to be a research need worth exploring in a marine sense and would recommend more investigations for the beneficiary applications of anammox in marine environments." @default.
