- W4285152652 abstract "Mycotoxins are usually produced in pre- or post-harvest periods when crops are in stressed conditions and become susceptible to the growth of various moulds. The climatic conditions contribute significantly to post-harvest mycotoxin contamination. The co-infection of multiple mycotoxigenic fungi and simultaneous production of more than one mycotoxin from a single fungal species leads to the production of a mycotoxin cocktail in the crops. The similar climatic conditions, same geographical location, similar harvesting, storing, and processing methods also contribute significantly in the co-occurrence of mycotoxins. Apart from this, the multi-commodity composition of food and feed is another reason for mycotoxin co-occurrence. The co-contamination of mycotoxins is frequently found in many agricultural commodities. The agriculture-based products have been regularly tested for the presence of only a few major mycotoxins, like aflatoxins, ochratoxins, zearalenone. Despite the risk associated with toxicological interactions of mycotoxins, there is hardly any regulation on their combined occurrence globally. The present chapter discusses the co-occurrence of mycotoxins food and feed and their subsequent toxicity in humans and animals." @default.
