- W4285154380 abstract "Catechins are vital flavonoids that are used as one of the potential candidates to fight cancer through their antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are organic compounds that slow down the rate of damage to the cells caused by free radicals which are highly unstable molecules with free electrons in the outer orbit and can react with proteins, lipids, and other organic substances. Free radicals in the form of reactive oxygen species (ROS) are normally derived from aerobic metabolic processes of the electron transport chain in the mitochondria, where part of the utilized oxygen is released as a superoxide anion during various physical and metabolic activities inside the cells. However, exposure to external factors such as x-rays, ozone, cigarette smoke, air pollutants, industrial chemicals, etc. can lead to significant production of free radicals. Elevated levels of free radicals can contribute to tumor formation. Antioxidants play an important role in cancer treatment. Glutathione (GSH), alpha lipoic acid (ALA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), etc. serve as endogenous enzymatic antioxidants. However, supplement of exogenous antioxidant such as vitamin C was shown to combat cancer in earlier studies. There are several plant-based molecules which are strong antioxidants and are under clinical trials against several diseases. Among those plant-based compounds, catechins which are found in green tea are of great importance. Several in vitro studies have demonstrated that the catechins have promising effects against different types of cancer. Green tea, Camellia sinensis, being a great choice among the growing population may also play an intriguing role to fight cancer. This chapter intends to provide insights into the role of catechins as antioxidant and anticancer agents, especially against cancer stem cells (CSCs)." @default.
