- W4285154985 abstract "Mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) are a group of small, colorless, and water-soluble secondary metabolites in cyanobacteria, eukaryotic algae, fungi, and macroalgae. They are well-known for their strong ultraviolet (UV)-absorbing ability and have been long considered to act as a natural sunscreen for protecting their producer from harmful UV irradiation. In the past few decades, substantial progress has been made in the biosynthesis, physicochemical aspects, and applications of MAAs in cyanobacteria. Microcystis is the most common freshwater bloom-forming cyanobacterium. MAAs also occur in Microcystis. Whether there is an ecological link between MAAs and the occurrence of massive Microcystis blooms remains an open question. This chapter provides the most updated knowledge related to the three basic aspects of MAAs in Microcystis: (i) detection, (ii) biosynthesis and genetic markers, and (iii) biofunctions. It would aid in guiding us to better understand and study the ecophysiology of MAAs in Microcystis and other cyanobacteria." @default.
