- W4285155500 abstract "This chapter first reviews the historical context underlying treatment and conceptualization of the Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome (TS), followed by recent advances in psychotherapy to treat tics. Thus, a step toward integrating behavioral, cognitive, and physiological components is proposed to better understand the larger context typically involved in tic disorders. For that intent, we propose to define etiological concepts and recent data on the neuropsychology and physiology of motor processing and the cerebral motor overactivation hypothesis. These data are convergent with a probable cortical motor over-activation hypothesis of patients with TS encompassing faster motor program selection, which involve sub-optimal functioning in some basal ganglia structures and other related regions such as the supplementary motor area (SMA). The next segment aims at presenting an integrative model with a component of motor training that allows the improvement of overactive and inhibitory control. These initial baseline factors may relate to high sensorimotor activation, elevated and less flexible muscle contraction, and complement the application of behavioral principles embedded in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Finally, we propose that biofeedback coupled with CBT could significantly improve symptoms and favor cognitive and cerebral changes as reflected by brain plasticity in TS. Thus, it is possible to incorporate knowledge on psychology and neurobiology for integrated CBT and biofeedback within that prerequisite." @default.
