- W4285162561 abstract "Massive bone defects are encountered in the setting of revision knee arthroplasty especially following infection, periprosthetic fractures, long-standing failed primary knee arthroplasty with massive osteolysis and failed megaprosthesis. Reconstruction of large defects become challenging when the use of augments, cones and sleeves is limited due to the magnitude of the defect precluding their use for a successful outcome. The challenge can be overcome by the use of bulk allografts with an added benefit of restoring the bone stock. The bulk allografts can be used in the form of femoral heads for reconstruction of either the femoral or tibial condyles, or the allograft segment of distal femur or proximal tibia. The ideal candidate for an allograft reconstruction would be a relatively younger individual with high demand and likely to undergo further revisions in the future. Though an attractive option of osseous reconstruction, the allografts carry a risk of disease transmission, infection and non-union at the host–allograft junction." @default.
