- W4285179987 abstract "Emerging contaminants including microplastics, synthetic organics, high-technology rare earth elements, and antimicrobial resistance may undergo aerosolization become air-borne. Yet compared to soils and aquatic systems, limited studies and reviews exist on air-borne emerging contaminants. An exception is air-borne antimicrobial resistance, which has been detected in air-borne bioaerosols in indoor and outdoor environments, and the evidence has been reviewed recently. A number of studies have detected microplastics, emerging synthetic organic contaminants, and high-technology rare earth elements in the atmosphere. Until now, a comprehensive review on air-borne emerging contaminants has been lacking. Therefore, the present chapter analysed the existing evidence on four air-borne emerging contaminants: (1) microplastics, (2) emerging synthetic organic chemicals, (3) antibiotic resistance, and (4) high-technology rare earth elements. First, the possible reasons accounting for limited research on air-borne emerging contaminants are highlighted. Second, the nature, occurrence and (bio)physics of emerging contaminants in the atmospheric system are discussed. Finally, future research directions including knowledge gaps and challenges are highlighted." @default.
