- W4285185862 abstract "Renewed efforts on forage legumes utilization in forage-animal production systems are a necessity to the fundamentals of sustainable livestock nutrition and production. However, the reluctance of adoption and utilization of forage legumes by farmers are still a global concern among grassland scientists given the number of positive published studies available. Outside of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), haymaking is not a widespread practice forage conservation method for most other important forage legumes in both temperate and tropical regions of the world. While forage legumes silage production has been a more widespread choice of conservation among farmers globally, its production is not without its challenges in producing high-quality silage. An understanding of the nutritional components of legumes and the digestive process of ruminants will enable farmers and ruminant livestock advisors to strategize in improving legumes feed utilization efficiency. Nutritionally, the contribution of legumes to livestock production is enormous. Forage legumes have adequate crude protein (CP) content with a typical range of 7%–33% among warm- and cool-season species. Studies have shown that beef cattle can produce 17% greater average daily gain and 28.7% greater annual live weight gain on Marandu/palisade grass (Brachiaria brizantha)—forage peanut (Arachis pintoi) mixtures compared to monoculture palisade grass pasture fertilized annually at 120 kg nitrogen ha−1. A strong linear relationship (R2 = 0.664) between the increased proportion of forage peanut in the pasture mixture and the average daily gain of cattle has also been reported. Additionally, Holstein dairy cows grazing perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.)—white clover (Trifolium repens L.) mixed pasture produced 9.9% greater milk daily than those grazing perennial ryegrass pasture only. Even with these documented gains, legumes’ persistence in pasture systems remains a major obstacle to their widespread incorporation in grazing pasture systems. In the traditional binary or intermingled grass-legume mixtures, the general observation is a decline or even loss of the legume component in mixed swards. Therefore, alternative grazing pasture design with forage legumes is a necessity to ease the concerns of legumes’ disappearance. This chapter aims at offering some insights-based largely on current literature into forage legumes value, currently improve practices and alternative grazing pasture design for sustainable forage legumes utilization." @default.
