The fractional-order proportional integral derivative (FOPID) controller was developed by substituting the integer-order rate of the error at the control input with its fractional-order equivalents of μ and λ at the output representing a fractional-order summation (integration) of the outputs. The values of these orders {λ, μ} along with {K1, K2, K3, K4} are variables used in the optimization algorithm. The developed controllers were applied to two-area interconnected microgrid power system with multiple disturbances and low system inertia with the best settling time achieved by the fuzzy PID controller when optimized with smell agent optimization (SAO) using the time-weighted absolute error (ITAE) performance criterion. The gains of developed controllers were optimized using grasshopper optimization algorithm (GOA) and SAO by minimizing the integral absolute error (IAE), integral square error (ISE), ITAE, and integral time square error (ITSE) performance criteria. This provided more possibilities in improving system robustness as well as transient performance. The performance of developed FOPID and fuzzy FOPID controllers was compared with basic PID and fuzzy PID controllers using the convergence characteristics and optimal fitness values of performance criteria. The results obtained showed that the FOPID controller outperformed other controllers as shown along with the optimal fitness values of the ITSE performance criterion." @default.
