- W4285191817 abstract "According to World Health Organization (WHO) data, 37.9 million people globally were living with HIV, 1.7 million people became newly infected with HIV, 32.0 million people have died from AIDS-related illnesses since its inception until the end of 2018. As evident from the data HIV/AIDS is one of the wide spread diseases affecting global health and influencing economic development and social stability. Prevention plays an important role in the fight against HIV/AIDS, as no effective HIV therapy is currently available. Different drugs and delivery strategies have been tested but, most were not satisfactory with respect to efficacy and safety. Unfavorable pharmacokinetic properties could potentially be the problem associated with majority of drugs. Nanotechnology has the potential to solve the problems associated with traditional HIV vaccines. Nanotechnology-based systems, either presenting inherent anti-HIV activity or acting as drug nanocarriers. It may significantly influence features such as drug solubility, stability, drug release, interactions between active moieties and virus/cells, intracellular drug delivery, drug targeting, safety, antiviral activity, mucoadhesive behavior, drug distribution and tissue penetration, and pharmacokinetics. Alongside, CD41 T lymphocytes, monocyte/macrophage (Mo/Mac) are an important lineage in the pathogenesis of HIV. Nanoparticles are known to accumulate in the tissues of the mononuclear phagocyte system (MPS) because of phagocytosis by Mo/Mac. Therefore, nanoparticles represent an interesting carrier system for the specific transport of antiviral agents to Mo/Mac in an attempt to reduce the required dose, to minimize toxicity and side effects, and to improve the delivery of substances which have insufficient intracellular uptake." @default.
